Effective Ways on Removing High Levels of Sulfur

Hello Joe,

Thank you for contacting us in regard to treating your water.  From the form on our website you have reported the following information that you would like help with:

“I need some help designing a system to handle high level of sulfur”

One very effective method at destroying high levels of sulfur in well water is to implement a Chlorinator to inject a diluted mixture of chlorine & water.  Once injected the 40 gallon Contact Tank allows for the required retention time to oxidize and destroy the sulfur to an elemental form.  Finally filtration being done by a backwashing Carbon filter to remove the oxidized sulfur, sediment, residual chlorine, as well as improving the overall tastes & odors.

The Precision-24 self-priming chlorine pump systems are easy to install by anyone familiar with basic plumbing and very easy to maintain yourself.  Settings for the pump will be provided as well as the ratio of Clorox : Water to be used.

Getting Rid of Rotten Egg odors Within a $1500 Budget

Hello Ron,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:

“My water has a rotten egg smell that I would like to remove. I would like to spend up to $1500 to improve my water. What would you advise?”

The following method uses hydrogen peroxide injection with the use of a metering pump, which provides extra strength oxidation for strong odors and high levels of hydrogen sulfide and bacteria (which can be linked with sulfur odors).  This system also provides disinfection, giving you bacteria free water.

Aeration System vs Chlorination System Against Sulfur Odors

Hello Mr. G,

Thank you for contacting us yesterday about your sulfur odor issues. L
ike we talked about, it would be nice to have the water analysis on hand in order to know what to recommend to you. If you’re interested, here is a link to a test kit that we offer that covers the basic mineral content of your water:

Basically, it’s a two-part test kit.  It includes testing at DIY home testing for iron, pH, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, etc… and it also includes two sample bottles for testing at our lab.  The lab test is quite accurate and gives results for hardness, manganese, iron, TDS, and pH.  Between the home testing and lab results, we should have everything we need to make a great recommendation for you on how to remove iron and prevent odor and staining problems.

Toilet and Dishwasher Discoloration: What's the best solution?

Hello Mr. K,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:

“I currently have a 1.5 cuft filox iron filter that is handling the iron for us now.  I am getting some pass through on the iron because we still get some staining in the toilets over time and we see orange on our dishwater filter regularly.  I have a grundfos 22SQE15-220 submersible pump.  This is a variable speed pump.  I am considering a hydrogen peroxide and active carbon filter to add to my system and need to talk about what all is needed and the best approach to resolving these remaining issues.  On a side note, we observed some bluing under the toilet rim, but i am not sure if that is from cleaning or the water. I would like a call on Tuesday to discuss a plan for my system.  Thanks"

We can definitely help. Here are the main points to consider here when planning a peroxide injection system:
  • Since it is a variable-speed pump, you would specifically need what is referred to as a proportional injection system.  This is would use a water meter plumbed in-line that would detect what the flow rate is, and then it would send a signal along to a pump control module, which would in turn send a command to the injection pump telling it just how much to inject into your water to match the changing flow.
  • For peroxide, we always recommend not just activated carbon, but catalytic carbon, which is better-suited for peroxide removal as well as iron.  We would recommend that this all be place in-line prior to the iron filter system.
  • It would be best to use either an inline mixer or a contact tank to ensure that the oxidation reaction is taking place.  For best results, it would be good to go with a contact tank.

Intracoastal Water with Seemingly Unsolvable Sulfur Stench Issue

Hello Jeff,

Thank you for contacting us.  You wrote:
“Well water. Tested fine by professional water company. HORRIBLE sulfur smell with cold water & hot. Tried potassium permanganate, bleach, & had an aerator/venturi installed. All had ZERO effect.  The entire house smells when you turn on any water. House is on intracoastal water; new purchase for us, 16 years old house.”

Usually we find that chlorination is the single-most effective method or system for eliminating strong sulfur smells.  You said you’ve already tried bleach- what did that entail for you?  Were you injecting liquid bleach into your line by means of an injection pump, treating all the water continuously?  Or do you just mean you added chlorine bleach to your well manually once or twice to shock it?

Help Eliminate Annoying Reddish-Orange Stains, Iron Residue, and Odor

Hello Joe,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:

“eliminate redish orange stains and minor odor from 535 foot deep well(private)  Some iron residue”
We really would need to know just how much iron is present in your water in order to make a recommendation.  I would suggest you either get the water tested locally, through a lab or by purchasing a simple test kit locally.  Or, here is a link to a test kit that we offer, that you can use to cover the basic mineral content of your water.

Coliform Bacteria Contaminating Well Water

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:

“ 110 ft  well Good water  15 Gal /per /min. tested pos   for total  coliform. wells fine  it is after  the presser/tank,  some were in the  main line”

So, are you saying that coliform bacteria is actually your only concern with your water?  Additionally, is this for your home, or for something else like a business or farm?

Finding the Right Filtration and Purification System for Bottled Water Business

Hello Brennan,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:

“Hi, I am starting a small bottled water business with a spring source. I  need to purchase a filtration system such as reverse osmosis and a purification system like an ozone system and I need some help figuring out what is right for me. Please have someone email me. Thanks”

We can definitely help you set up a system, but for something like this, the first major question is, how much water do you need in a day?  Reverse osmosis systems are sized based on the desired capacity you need in a given day.

Help for High Turbidity, High Iron, Hard Water

Hello Mr. M,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:
“need a system to clean up our well water, very hard, high iron, high turbidity”

While it can be challenging to treat water like this with such a high amount of iron, manganese, hardness and total dissolved solids, there are several options available.

One way is to oxidize the water first with chlorine, then filter with Greensand or Pro-OX iron filter media.  However, since there is no sulfur odor present, it is possible to use a standalone Greensand Iron Filter followed by a whole house reverse osmosis (“RO”) system.

This approach would use a Greensand iron and manganese filter first to take out the iron and manganese, then inject Pretreat Plus anti-scalant solution into the line to treat the calcium bicarbonate hardness, and then finally treat the water with a high-flow reverse osmosis system to remove all of the extremely high total dissolved solids content.

How to Treat Iron, Odor, and Iron Bacteria in Well Water

I have severe iron problems in our well water, around 8 parts per million.  The water also has a bad sulfur odor to it and we have a slime that my well guy said is iron bacteria. Is there any one system that can handle this water?

I want to chlorinate the water too to kill bacteria so I am looking for something that will handle chlorination and filter it at the same time.

John S.

Hello John,

Yes there is a way to address all these problems. For very high amounts of iron (up to around 10 ppm), one excellent long-lasting and highly effective iron filter is the Iron Filter 5900e AIR.  This iron filter uses natural air to oxidize the iron and remove odors and does not require any chemicals.
