Hello Jeff,
Thank you for contacting us. You wrote:“Well water. Tested fine by professional water company. HORRIBLE sulfur smell with cold water & hot. Tried potassium permanganate, bleach, & had an aerator/venturi installed. All had ZERO effect. The entire house smells when you turn on any water. House is on intracoastal water; new purchase for us, 16 years old house.”
Usually we find that chlorination is the single-most effective method or system for eliminating strong sulfur smells. You said you’ve already tried bleach- what did that entail for you? Were you injecting liquid bleach into your line by means of an injection pump, treating all the water continuously? Or do you just mean you added chlorine bleach to your well manually once or twice to shock it?

In the meantime, for a modestly-priced complete chlorination system, we can recommend using a Precision-24 chlorine injection metering pump, which provides extra strength oxidation for killing bacteria and oxidizing high levels of iron and manganese (which can be linked with sulfur odors). Following the point of injection, the chlorine would then feed into a 40-gallon contact tank to provide enough contact time for the solution to react with the iron, manganese and especially the coliform or e coli bacteria in the water. Much of the iron and manganese will precipitate out and settle to the bottom of the tank at this point.
Following the large contact tank, you could optionally choose to remove all of the chlorine after it has done its job by passing the water through a backwashing activated carbon filter that flushes automatically. See below for details:
