How to Treat Iron, Odor, and Iron Bacteria in Well Water

I have severe iron problems in our well water, around 8 parts per million.  The water also has a bad sulfur odor to it and we have a slime that my well guy said is iron bacteria. Is there any one system that can handle this water?

I want to chlorinate the water too to kill bacteria so I am looking for something that will handle chlorination and filter it at the same time.

John S.

Hello John,

Yes there is a way to address all these problems. For very high amounts of iron (up to around 10 ppm), one excellent long-lasting and highly effective iron filter is the Iron Filter 5900e AIR.  This iron filter uses natural air to oxidize the iron and remove odors and does not require any chemicals.

This type of iron filter maintains an “air pocket” in the top of the tank while the system is in service.  When the iron filter is backwashed, air is drawn into the iron filter tank which creates a pocket of air at the top of the tank. As water enters the iron filter it passes through this layer of air and air is diffused into the water. Check out the diagram below to see how it works:

I’ve also included information on a chlorinator, as per your request.

Precision-24 Chlorinator Package with Solution Tank:

Can be either 110 volt or 220 volt plug; can be hardwired to a pressure switch to come on with a well pump.  Works with well water flow rates from 1 – 50 Gallons per Minute (GPM)

Output rating:  0.1 – 24 Gallons per Day (GPD).  Pressure rating:  Will inject into lines with up to 110 PSI.

Additional features:  Degassing Valve is built in which makes this great for chlorination use.  System includes Chlorination Pump, 10 Gallon Solution Tank, Injection Check Valve, tubing and installation fittings.  25 & 35 Gallon tanks also available for additional cost.

Pro-OX Iron Filter 5900e AIR 1.5 CF

Air Charger Pro-OX Iron Filter 5900e AIR 1.5 CF: The Air-Charger AIO Air Injection Oxidizing Filter, as a single tank system, is an efficient and cost effective system for the removal of iron and sulfur.
The Air-Charger AIO maintains an air pocket in the top of the tank while the system is in service.
As the water passes thru the air pocket, iron and sulfur are oxidized.

·        Additionally, dissolved oxygen is added to the water.
·        The Pro-OX solid manganese dioxide filter media bed then removes the iron and sulfur from the water.
·        The Pro-OX 5900 AIR can remove up to 5 ppm Hydrogen Sulfide and up to 10 ppm Iron.
·        A daily backwash will remove accumulated iron and replenish the filter media bed.
·        The regeneration process also adds a fresh air pocket to the system.
