Best Ways to Remove Iron and Soften Water for Disabled Persons

Hello Anthony,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.  You wrote:

Have you had your water tested?  If you’re interested, here is a link to a test kit that we offer, that you can use to cover the basic mineral content of your water.

Basically, it’s a two-part test kit.  It includes testing at home, on-site, that you would perform yourself for iron, pH, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, etc… and it also includes two sample bottles in a mailer that goes back to use for testing at our lab.  The lab test is quite accurate and gives results for hardness, manganese, iron, TDS, and pH.  Between the home testing and lab results, we should have everything we need to make a great recommendation for you on how to remove that iron and prevent odor and staining problems.

Water analysis would be very useful for us to have in order to make a recommendation for you.  In the meantime, however, I can make the following recommendations on a backwashing iron filter followed by a salt-free conditioner to address hardness.  I should point out that both systems have limitations as to how much iron and hardness they can work with, so it would be ideal to know what your chemistry shows.  The Pro-OX filter system works well up to about 5 ppm of iron, and the Scale Stopper salt-free conditioner can work on hardness up to about 15 grains per gallon.  For levels beyond those points, please give us a call or email back to discuss so we can modify our recommendations.

See below:

Iron and Manganese:  One great way to remove high levels of iron is our backwashing Pro-OX iron filter.  The Pro-OX iron filter is definitely our best system for oxidizing and filtering out manganese and iron.  It lasts a long time- usually around 6 to 8 years before needing to be replaced, and requires no maintenance.  It comes complete with all of the filtering media required, NSF-certified digital control valve, and it can oxidize and filter out high levels of iron.

Pro-Ox Iron Filter 5900 Series, 1 cu. Ft, 115 Volt:

Pro-Ox Iron Filter 5900 Series

Pro-OX Iron Filter 5900 Series includes pipe connectors; by-pass valve; 1.0 cubic feet of Pro-OX Manganese Dioxide NSF Certified filter media; 10 x 44 inch filter tank; 5900 automatic backwash control valve. Uses the Enpress tank with Vortech distributor which allows the Pro-OX media to be backwashed at lower flow rates with less water, saving water and energy.

Dimensions: 10” diameter x 50” height with valve; Chlorine side tank is 10.5” diameter x 16” high

Excellent Warranty: 5 years on the control valve & 10 years on the mineral tank.
A salt-free conditioner is actually a great alternative to traditional water softener systems.  It doesn’t remove the hardness, so it doesn’t quite feel like zero-hardness-water does.  However, it does do a great job of preventing scale buildup by transforming the calcium and magnesium hardness minerals into inactive Nano crystal particles.

Scale Stopper Salt-Free System 4.0 Liter, 12gpm:

Scale Stopper Salt-Free System 4.0 LiterSystem comes complete with 1” bypass, pipe connectors, and 4.5 liters of Filtersorb SP3 media.

Also includes a free prefilter sediment filter cartridge to improve tastes and odors and to protect the Filtersorb media.

Green alternative to water softener.  Maximum flow of 16 gallons per minute.   When the inlet water goes into the water conditioner tank, the Scale Stopper media acts as a catalyst and pulls the hardness minerals of calcium and magnesium out of the solution and transforms these minerals into inactive Nano crystal particles.

Dimensions:  10” Diameter x 59.5” Tall with valve installed
