Well Pump & Pressure Tank Diagram

Gerry,

Do you have a well pump and pressure tank diagram you can send me?  My son asked me how our well works, and I was trying to find some basic diagram that showed all the working parts.  We have what I think is pretty typical well here in Montana, a submerged pump down in the ground, and a pressure tank on top.

By the way,  I got your test kit and that worked great, thanks again for helping me sort out my well problems.

How to Get An Iron Filter That Does Not Use Salt or Chemicals

Hello there,

Can I get an iron filter that will remove iron and manganese without using chemicals or salt?

I put in an iron filter last year from a different company to remove iron and manganese from my home well water..  They had promised me I would not use any chemicals, but it only worked for a few months, and then the water was bad again.  The iron filter they sold me came with greensand and calcite and some other media I am not sure what it was.

When I called them back, they said it was because I needed a chlorinator and then they tried to sell me a chlorinator.  I don’t have any sulfur smell, just iron (about 2.0 – 3.0 PPM) and manganese (about 0.15 PPM or so, not sure exactly, it's there but not a huge amount).  I also emailed you our water test report.

Any suggestions?  It's just me and my wife and dogs, 2 bathroom home.  We have about 12 gallons a minute from our well pump.

Need Help with Rotten Egg Smell but Do Not Want Chlorine

Dear Sir,

My question has to do with smelly water.  Our well water smells bad (rotten-eggs) in the cold water, and its worse in the hot water.  I prefer not to use chlorine, is there some of aeration tank I can use?

Our home has two bathrooms, 4 people.  Our well water is good except for smell.  We don’t get rust stains like our neighbors.  When we purchased this place it was tested and no bacteria was present and water is supposedly safe to drink, it just smells terrible.  Thank you.

Will Chlorination Remove Odor By Itself?

Gerry,

We have a 2-1/2 bathroom home with two persons living here, although our kids sometimes visit us and stay for a few days.  I used the Easy Well Water Test Kit (it was easy, thanks) and came up with the following:

Hardness:  36 grains/gallon
Iron:  0.32 mg/L
Manganese: 0.04
Total Dissolved Solids:  484 PPM
pH: 7.2
Sulfate: 120 PPM
Hydrogen Sulfide:  2 – 4 PPM
Alkalinity:  240 PPM

I checked our flow rate using your guide and came up with 10.5 gallons per minute.

Our main problem is the odor. We get a faint smell of rotten-egg odor right from the well, but we also have it in the hot water as well.   Will chlorination will work for us?  I mean, can we just get the chlorinator and nothing else, or do we need to filter the water?   We need to replace our old water softener too.   Thank you.
