Coliform, E coli and Hardness

We have coliform and e coli, water is very hard, 3 properties attached to well.
-Mr. Stone

Hardness is easy to handle- we would recommend an efficient salt-based water softener.  High total dissolved solids are handled by reverse osmosis treatment, which is easy to handle for just drinking water, but relatively elaborate (expensive) for whole-house treatment.  Finally, the bacteria issue is usually only of concern if you’re looking to drink the water.  If not, you might not need to do anything.  If you do wish to drink the water, the water should ideally be chlorinated and given a lot of contact time, but there are a few other ways to approach it as well.

To thoroughly treat this water, we can recommend using a Precision-24 chlorine injection metering pump, which provides extra strength oxidation for killing bacteria and oxidizing high levels of iron and manganese (which can be linked with sulfur odors).   Following the point of injection, the chlorine would then feed into a 120-gallon contact tank to provide enough contact time for the solution to react with the iron, manganese and especially the coliform or e coli bacteria in the water.  Much of the iron and manganese will precipitate out and settle to the bottom of the tank at this point.

Following the large contact tank, the water should pass through a backwashing carbon iron filter, which will collect all of the iron and manganese and flush it out automatically to drain.  Finally, you could use an efficient salt-based water softener to eliminate any hardness present in the water.
