How to Remove Iron & Odor from Well Water for Home Irrigation System

Hello,

Private well to be used for lawn irrigation system. Flow rate max is 10GPM and expect to use approx. 1600 gals per day (maybe as high as 1800 gals) during extended dry summer periods. Iron content approx. 7PPM and a faint rotten egg smell of standing water.

Thanks,
Rich

Hello Rich,

For your application we recommend two 1.5 cubic foot size model Air Charger Iron Filters in parallel because of the high demand. However, these only work if your existing well system has a pressure tank. If your well has no pressure tank, you would not be able to use a back-washing iron filter.

In order to handle the demand, it would be best to have 3.0 cubic of iron filter media.  However, the largest iron filter you can get that is non-chemical, and can backwash with 7 GPM is the AIO 2.0 CF or 2.5 CF size, both of  which use 7 GPM for backwash. This will give you the capacity you need to treat the water per day.  In your application twin tanks are preferable to one larger tank, since a single large iron filter tank would require more than 10 GPM to backwash it.

A daily backwash will remove
accumulated iron and replenish the filter
media bed. The regeneration process
also adds a fresh air pocket to the system.

This iron filter uses natural air to oxidize the iron and remove odors and does not require any chemicals. This type of iron filter maintains an “air pocket” in the top of the tank while the system is in service. When the iron filter is backwashed, air is drawn into the iron filter tank which creates a pocket of air at the top of the tank. As water enters the iron filter it passes through this layer of air and air is diffused into the water.

Air charge iron filters can remove up to 8 ppm Hydrogen Sulfide and up to 7 ppm Iron. A daily backwash will remove accumulated iron and replenish the filter media bed. The regeneration process also adds a fresh air pocket to the system.

These iron filter systems come equipped with a Fleck 2510SXT air injection control head that automatically backwashes the system daily to clean the media and flush everything down the drain. By utilizing a patented piston in the control valve, the iron filter is able to put the whole oxidation process inside one tank, keeping maintenance costs and down time to a minimum.

Here is a diagram of a typical installation of the iron filters (but for your usage and flow, two iron filters in parallel are needed). These systems are designed to be easily installed by any plumber or person familiar with basic plumbing:
