We have a well at a cabin that we use intermittently (weekends, mostly in summer, but use it year-round). The water comes out clear, but has an odor and turns the sink, toilet and tub orange. We have recently replaced the pump and pipes (iron). The old
pipe coming out of the well was black. The plumbing under the cabin is copper. The well and pressure tank are in a 8' deep pit (cinderblock underground room)but we drain it in the winter. In the winter temperatures can get down to 10-20 below zero. Cabin is at 8000 ft. elevation.
The water has never been treated. We do not drink it, but would like to. The well is 150' deep. The water has a strong oder. BART test was positive at 500 cfu/mL. Total alkalinity 100 ppm, o ppm fluoride, iron > 5 ppm, but the test didn't measure more than 5. Appears to be much higher (10ppm is a guess). No corrosion, and no mineral buildup. Water has always had iron and a very strong sulfur odor (at least 50 years).
Regards,
Mr Jonson
Dear Mr Jonson,
The best way to remove high iron, manganese, sulfur odors and kill iron bacteria and issues is by injecting chlorine into your water, and then removing it using our MangOX iron filter. The system is fully automatic and self-cleaning, and there are no filter cartridges to change.
In this system, the chlorine bleach kills the bacteria and removes the odors, and allows the MangOX iron filter media to remove much higher levels of iron and manganese. The 40-gallon contact retention tank allows for enough contact time for the chlorine to react with the iron and manganese and bacteria. This provides clean, disinfected, odor-free, chlorine-free water throughout the house. These Stenner self-priming chlorine pump systems are easy to install by anyone familiar with basic plumbing and very easy to maintain yourself.
You can adjust the chlorinator pump so that you will be injecting just the bare minimum of what is needed, without having an especially noticeable or unpleasant chlorine residual. However, many customers choose to remove the chlorine by means of a carbon filter, which would go in line after the MangOX filter. The carbon filter would have the added benefit of being an additional filter to take out remnants of iron and rust particles. Please note- the carbon filter is OPTIONAL and can of course be added at a later date.
This same system below can also be used with hydrogen peroxide instead of chlorine. When peroxide is added to water a large amount of dissolved oxygen is released and a powerful oxidizing effect occurs. Coliform and iron bacteria are killed, and tannins are oxidized. This type of iron filter system handles the absolute worst type of water reliably and effectively. Peroxide oxidizes the iron, manganese and sulfur odors to a solid form that the catalytic carbon can remove. For many applications no contact tank is required, and the hydrogen peroxide is effectively removed by the catalytic carbon media.
