Well Water Filter To Remove Iron In Water and Sulfur Smells

Sir -  I have well water that is high in iron, manganese and sulfur smells.  The last folks that lived here had a water softener which helped with the iron but did not seem to help much with the rotten-egg odor.  I think I have iron bacteria, because there is a slime in our toilet tanks. I have emailed you my water test
results, what do you suggest I use? I don’t want to use a water softener.

Dear Ken –

Based on what was reported with your levels of Iron and Manganese one very effective way to remove these contaminants in well water is to use a chlorine injection pump, followed by a MangOX media iron filtration system.  The result is clean, odor-free disinfected water throughout the home.

How this works is the chlorine bleach kills the Iron bacteria and eliminates the rotten-egg odors, and allows the MangOX iron filter media to remove high levels of iron and manganese.  The 40-gallon contact retention tank allows for enough contact time for the chlorine to react with the iron, manganese, etc.  This provides clean, disinfected, Iron-free water throughout the house.  The pumps we recommend (by Stenner) are self-priming chlorinator pumps and are easy to install by anyone familiar with basic plumbing. Maintenance is very low and all you have to do is add some chlorine bleach to the solution tank every few months.

The chlorine is removed as it flows through the iron filter so you don’t smell or taste chlorine in the house.

MangOX is a media that utilizes an oxidation-reduction reaction and filtration process similar to Greensand, but with superior performance and durability.  MangOX media also lasts a long time, typically 10+ years based on the amount of water used. These filters are fully automatic and use the reliable Fleck 7000 control valve along with the advanced Vortech inner distributor system which reduces backwash requirements by 30%.

MangOX Iron Filter 7000 1.5 Cubic Foot, 115 volt

MangOX contains 80% manganese dioxide in an extremely unique cluster format for enhanced performance and maximized capacity.  Uses the Enpress tank with Vortech distributor which allows the Catalox media to be backwashed at lower flow rates with less water, saving water and energy.  No need for permanganate as will utilize the chlorination system as it’s oxidizer.
