Filter Tank Backwash Flow Rate Required?

Hello Sirs,
Will a 7"x44" 0.5cf Chemsorb Tank backwash from a 3.5gpm flow? I have a dc shallow well pump in my cistern that I don't really want to replace but I would like to replace my sediment filter cartridges. (unrestricted flow is 3.9gpm)

Will your KDF Media Guard Cartridges work in a 7"x44" or 6”x35” backwashing Activated Carbon Tank?

You may not be able to answer this, but I have been considering purchasing a U440 Ultrafiltration System (Backflush Install). I know that kdf media gives off zinc oxide which has anti-bacterial effects increasing the life of Carbon but I’m wondering if it could be placed before an Ultrafiltration system to help keep the membrane from fouling?

Would you recommend placing a KDF/Carbon tank before or after a U440 system or sticking with 0.5m carbon blocks.

Sincerely,
Karl

Hi Karl,

Please view the answers below:

3.5 gpm would work fine for it, that is the appropriate amount of backwash flow.
Do you have a pressure tank?  If so, that would help ensure that the backwash would be sufficient.

It would work fine in a 7” x 44” tank, but you wouldn’t want to put it in a 6” 35” tank- it’s about 33” long, and with the distributor basket at the bottom of the tank, there wouldn’t be any room.

It’s not really rated to do so- what really helps Ultrafiltration membranes from fouling is decent pre-filtering to take out solid matter.

Placing the filter beforehand would work well for prefiltering.  On a related note- would you like a quote on a decent U440 system?  We have a few options, some of which are incredibly low-cost but superb quality.  Let me know and I can work up a quote.

The following is a quote based on your specifications-

7” x 44” 0.5 CF Sediment Manual Backwash Filter
·         For this size of tank, chrome jackets aren’t available, though blue or almond jackets are available.  Let me know if you would like a quote with one of these colors instead.
·         If the chrome jacket is really important, we can do this size of system in an 8” x 44” tank, and that should still work for your flow rate.  Let me know if you would like a quote with an 8” x 44” tank instead.

Like you said, the filter strainer is recommended in this case, in order to ensure the protection the venturi injector.  We would recommend this model:

Filter Strainer 1"  60 mesh

I hope this information helps with your questions if I may be of further assistance please give me a call or an email.  I’m happy to help.   Thanks again for the opportunity to be of assistance, I look forward to hearing from you.
