How To Remove High Levels of Nitrate from My Well Water?

Dear sir,

I am selling a home in an area known for high nitrates in groundwater.  The test came back at 10.1 mg/L. well is at 100 ft and is 8 years old. Can I use one of your whole house Nitrate treatment systems to get it below 10 mg/L?.  The water is also hard but there is no water softener there, yet."

Jerry,

Yes, our nitrate systems are designed to reduce nitrate levels by up to 80%, and they are rated to take it down to below the EPA guideline levels, too.

To be sure of how well it would work on your water specifically, however, we would want to get a look at your complete well water analysis.  Do you have a report you could share?  In addition to the nitrate level, it is also important to know the hardness level and the sulfates as well.

In the meantime, we can suggest a water softener followed by a whole-house nitrate filter system. The nitrate systems work well but are affected by high levels of hardness, so its best to soften the water before the nitrate filter.

The whole house nitrate system would look very similar to a standard water softener, however it would use Anion (negatively charged resin) ion exchange rather than Cation (positively charged resin) ion exchange.  These simply do a regeneration every 3 – 7 days using a salt brine to rinse away contaminants and recharge the Nitrate media.

Nitrate Removal System.  These automatic backwashing nitrate systems using Anion exchange resin can reduce Nitrate levels by 80%.  All the filter medium needed is included with the system.  Nitrates are typically a result of fertilizer run-off from agricultural operations or poorly designed/leaking septic systems.  The maximum Nitrate MCL level as designated by the EPA for nitrate-N is 10 mg/L (parts per million).
