Can I Use a Commercial Reverse Osmosis System to Remove Iron and Total Dissolved Solids?

We have a small indoor nursery hydroponic growing operation that requires purified water, and we are looking at 6000 gallon per day RO systems. See attached water test report, our well also has high levels of iron. Can we use the RO to remove both iron and TDS? As you can see our water is soft, our main problems are high TDS and high levels of iron. We are in Canada. Have you ever worked with grow operations?

How Can I Neutralize or Raise pH in My Well Water When It is Between 4 and 5?

I have a question. I bought a small one bath cottage with a shallow well jet pump. It is on the Chesapeake Bay. The PH level is between 4 and 5. I believe I need a Soda Ash system. Is that the best way to raise the pH in my well water? What do you suggest?”

John G.

That’s true, to raise your pH up from such a low level, we would advise using a soda ash injection system. Soda ash is made of sodium carbonate, which reacts with the dissolved acidity in your water to bring up the pH and neutralize its corrosive qualities.

Where Should An Iron Filter Be Placed: Upstream Or Downstream Of The Well Pressure Tank?

Where should an iron filter be placed: upstream or downstream of the well pressure tank?

John Williams

Hello John,

Thanks for contacting us. Regarding your question for information:

The iron filter needs to be installed after the pressure tank. If it is installed before the pressure tank, it will not be able to backwash automatically. The filter needs varying amounts of flow and pressure, and if it were installed before the pressure tank, the well pump would not automatically turn on, since the pressure switch is located on the pressure tank side of the check valve. Additionally if installed before the pressure tank, there would be a chance the water would flow backwards from the pressure and enter the iron filter control valve through the outlet pipe.

What Problems Will I Have If I Do Not Have Enough Flow Rate to Backwash My Iron Filter?

I am interested in your pro-ox iron filter. I am having trouble determining the correct flow rate. what problems will i have if i select a size filter with a lower flow rate than my pump?

Hello Paul,

Thank you for contacting us through our website.

Did you try the flow rate calculating instructions that we have on our website? Here are the steps in case you haven’t seen them:
