How to Eliminate Rotten Egg Odors Without Chlorine

Today's blog post isn't a reply to a reader letter, but a brief overview of aeration as a treatment for odorous well water. If you have experienced "rotten egg" odors, but are wary of adding chemicals to your water, read on:

Odors in well water are commonly caused by iron and sulfur bacteria. These bacteria thrive on iron and sulfur and create sludgy, foul-smelling waste byproducts like methane and hydrogen sulfide gas.

How to Eliminate Sulfur Odors and Yellow Color in Water

Hello,

I have well water that has a lot of sulfur, yellow bath water, minerals, suffer smell. My water is acidic as well, I have been told. The water has made my home siding turn yellow. Just rented the home to a family of 6. I need your expert advise on what kind of whole house filter system that will clear this mess up.

Thanks,

Rick S.

Preventing Corrosion with a Calcite Cartridge Filter

Hi!

I have a well system, with extremely hard water and clear-water iron. I have installed a water softener system followed by a large rust remover system the same size. I also have a large RO system with a booster pump installed which feeds the pot filler faucet, refrigerator icemaker, and sink faucet. My new plumber just discovered that the original plumber hooked it up to copper pipe through the walls and floor from the downstairs RO to the upstairs users. My new plumber says he needs to tear into the walls and floor and ceiling and replace the lines with PEX. It's odd that copper would have been used on the RO line, since the rest of the house I know for sure is plumbed with PEX.

Anyway, rather than tearing into the walls, how about if I add some sort of inline filter after the RO tank that would put back some form of minerals to take away the corrosion potential? We have no current problems with minerals or rust (very soft and clean water), I am just worried about blowing out a copper line since we are gone most of the time from this vacation house.

Thanks,

Buck L.

Adding Filter Media to a Backwashing Neutralizer with Top Fill Plug

Hello,

I recently moved into a home which has an acid neutralizer installed. It is a 1-NF Hague Neutralizer. Can you instruct me as to how I can add the filter medium to the neutralizer?

Samuel,

The process of adding filter media to your neutralizer tank may differ a bit depending on what type of tank you have.  Adding filter media to a backwashing (downflow) neutralizer is different than adding media to an upflow neutralizer, and is further differentiated by the presence or lack of a top fill plug on either type of tank.

Disinfecting Spring Water with UV Sterilizers

Hello,

I live on a rural property and my water supply is from a spring. I know that the previous owners would use bromine every couple of years to insure bacteria free water, although they never actually had a "bad" water test. The capacity of this spring is 15 gpm and is for the household water supply (not irrigation). What capacity of UV filter would be appropriate for this type of system? I do not want to deal with back filters etc if I don't have to. I am also on a fixed income, so money IS an issue.

Thanks,

Karen B.
