Eliminate red staining and metallic tastes

The main symptoms I saw  that indicated to me that I need some form of water conditioning were red stains and metallic tastes in water. I have not noticed any odors.

Question Regarding Chlorine Disinfection of Well

Our well water tested positive for coliform but I can't get information about the depth of the well. The cap measures 6" diameter (with the wiring to the submersible pump visible). The house has 3 full and two half bathrooms.

I want to replace an old softener and eliminate the mild sulfur odor that is present in the hot and cold and use it for whole house water filtration.  It is very mild and not always present. I am interested in the KDF cartridge that can be added to a softener for the odor problem.

How Hard Should Water Be Before I Consider A Water Softener?

We are moving into a new house and my wife was told the water is “hard”.  The local water utility says the water is not very hard and they don’t recommend treatment.  How hard is too hard?  The water hardness varies but it is around 170 ppm they say.  What is water hardness anyway, rocks in the water?
